Holy Communion

Proper Disposition

Holy Communion may be received only by baptized Roman Catholics in the state of sanctifying grace who accept the teachings of the Catholic Church in matters of Faith and Morals.

Anyone conscious of mortal sin must first receive absolution in the Sacrament of Penance before approaching Holy Communion.

Non-Catholics and Catholics who are not properly disposed should not approach the Communion rail, but are encouraged to remain in their pew and make a spiritual communion.

The Communion Fast

The current law of the Church requires a one-hour fast from food and drink (except water and medicine) before receiving Holy Communion.

In keeping with Catholic tradition, the faithful are encouraged to observe a three-hour fast, and those who are able may keep the traditional fast from midnight before morning Mass.

How to Receive Holy Communion

Holy Communion is received kneeling at the Communion rail and on the tongue.

When the priest approaches, tilt your head slightly back and extend your tongue. Do not say “Amen,” as the priest says the full formula while administering the Host. Remain still while the Sacred Host is placed on your tongue, then return reverently to your pew.

Allow the Host to soften before swallowing, and do not chew or handle the Host.

Thanksgiving

After receiving Holy Communion, spend a few moments in silent thanksgiving, thanking Our Lord for the grace of receiving Him in the Blessed Sacrament.
